On Sunday, October 20th, 2024, my family and I were returning home from Church. Suddenly, my husband noticed something none of us had ever seen before in that particular area. On the opposite side of the road, many visible red traffic signs displayed these words: “Wrong Way”, or “Do Not Enter”. The Traffic Department had placed them on some parts of the road, to warn people not to go in that direction. They are supposed to stop inattentive or lost drivers from going forward and instead turn around to avoid a fatal crash with oncoming traffic.
We have seen similar signs in a parking lot or by a turning lane but not along the street. We couldn’t believe these signs had been there the whole time but for some reason, we never noticed them.
Immediately after the first few minutes of surprise, my thoughts went to the similarity of God sending warning signs to people. However, most don’t see them or if they do, they ignore them.
God warns of the consequences of sin, throughout the Bible, sometimes through a church sermon, the wise advice of a friend or relative, even a stranger handing out a religious tract, natural disasters, plagues, etc. But often, people take too long to change their direction, or they just decide to remain where they are.
Imagine a driver going the wrong way on a road. He sees the red signs by the sidewalk but doesn’t care and assumes that they are placed there by mistake. Not only that but there are also the reflectors that separate the lanes. These look red when you are going against traffic. So, after a minute of driving, he sees other cars coming towards him and instead of looking for a quick way out of the tangible danger, he convinces himself that all the others are the ones going in the wrong direction. So, they should move out of his way. Result? He creates havoc for others and probably loses his life and someone else’s. How stubborn and blind would someone be, to act this way?
Anyone watching him, would say that he has lost his mind. But this kind of reckless attitude shows up all the time in people’s lives when God is trying to get them out of harm’s way. They refuse to pay attention to the obvious attempts of God to tell them to turn away from evil. They are convinced that their plan is the best and they don’t need to submit to God’s laws. To them, submission to God means loss of freedom. They want to live their lives without someone getting in their way and telling them what to do. What they don’t realize is that instead, they are living in bondage to their sins and rebellion.
Therefore, to the rebellious out there, let me say that though God loves you, He will not pursue you forever. If you never received a warning from Him – which I doubt – then take this post as one. He is telling you right now that you are going the “wrong way”. You need to turn around because, there will be a time when the result of your resistance and rebellion will catch up with you and you won’t be able to blame God for it. He’s calling you to turn away from the path of destruction you’re on, and to follow His nudges towards the light, to the path of eternal life. I hope you listen…because God is Love but He is also Holy and Just. Therefore, He will judge all unrepentant sinners.
Wise people see trouble coming and get out of its way, but fools go straight to it and suffer for it. Proverbs 22:3 ERV
